THE BLESSING OF CHOOSING GOD’S WAY

Theme Verse:
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” – James 1:17

We all have desires, dreams, and goals that we aspire to achieve in life. To reach these milestones, there are typically two paths to choose from. The first is relying on our own strength, even when we know the path we’re taking is not right. This way often focuses solely on the goal, seeking quick and easy results. The second path is waiting on the Lord. Although this process may be challenging and slow, it aligns with God’s will and leads to true blessings. Let us examine these two approaches in the light of Scripture and discover the way that pleases God!

In the Bible, we see two individuals who desired to discern between good and evil: Eve and Solomon. Regarding Eve, the serpent said, “For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.” (Genesis 3:5). Tempted by this thought, “when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.” (Genesis 3:6).

In contrast, Solomon prayed, “Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?” (1 Kings 3:9).

These two examples show distinct approaches to the same desire, highlighting the outcomes of human ambition versus godly dependence.

From the Scriptures above, we see that while Eve and Solomon shared the same desire—to discern between good and evil—their approaches and outcomes were vastly different. When the serpent tempted Eve to eat the fruit from the forbidden tree, she clearly knew God had commanded her not to. Yet, seeking wisdom and the ability to distinguish good from evil, she chose to listen to Satan and disobeyed God. Though she achieved her desire quickly and easily, it did not bring her blessing. Instead, it brought a curse from the Lord—a consequence that continues to affect humanity today.

In contrast, Solomon also desired wisdom to discern between good and evil. However, rather than relying on his own understanding, he sought the Lord. Solomon recognized that “every good and perfect gift is from above” (James 1:17) and humbly asked God for this gift. God honored his request, granting him unparalleled wisdom—wisdom that has never been matched by any human. This is the beauty of a perfect gift from above: it is unique, incomparable, and truly blessed.

From the two incidents above, we learn that pursuing our desires through disobedience to God may lead to temporary success, but it will never result in true blessing. On the other hand, when we wait on the Lord and seek His face, even our ordinary requests can be transformed into extraordinary gifts from above—blessings far beyond what we could imagine.

No matter how challenging or demanding the wait may be, let us trust in the Lord and seek His perfect timing. The goodness He gives will not only bless us but will follow us throughout our lives. May we always choose His way!

God bless!
