We all wish to succeed in life. We see many people grow quickly before our eyes, yet despite working harder than them, we can’t seem to achieve the same success. Sometimes, it’s hard to understand why their strategies work while ours don’t. We remain confused about what we need to do to achieve success and what the right path to success is. Despite putting in hard work through physical strength and wisdom, sometimes our efforts don’t seem to pay off. We plan and develop strategies, but they often fail in various aspects, leaving us feeling weary.
In this article, I would like to share the secret to working smart, not hard, to achieve success.
Let me illustrate this with a story from the Bible, found in John 21. After Jesus was crucified and resurrected, Peter decided to go fishing, and some of the other disciples joined him. They worked tirelessly throughout the night, but despite their efforts, they didn’t catch a single fish. As the Bible says in verse 3, “That night they caught nothing.”
It’s important to note that these were not novices; Peter was an experienced fisherman. With years of expertise, he likely used all the skills and techniques he had mastered, knowing where to find fish and how best to catch them. Yet, that night, nothing worked.
Unexpectedly, Jesus appeared and shared a simple but powerful instruction in verse 6: “Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and you will find some.” When they followed His direction, the result was astonishing—they caught so many fish that they couldn’t even haul the net into the boat. This moment reveals the transformative power of working smart, guided by divine wisdom, rather than relying solely on human effort.
