The high school years are a whirlwind of distractions: friends, family, sports and extracurricular activities. It’s easy to forget that these are also the prime years for applying for scholarships—and that many of them have application deadlines in March and April. You may be surprised at how easy it is to win money for college simply by putting forth some effort and thought into your application material.

Scholarships can come from a variety of sources. They may be large or small, but in most cases, they’re worth applying for because you have nothing to lose and much to gain. Here are some of the scholarships available to seniors in high school:

  • George S. & Stella M. Knight Essay Contest

Application Deadline: Varies Amount: $6,000

The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) invites all high school students (9th through 12th grades) interested in the American Revolution to participate in the George S. & Stella M. Knight Essay Contest. The contest is open to all US Citizen and Legal Resident students attending home schools, public, parochial, or private high schools in that same grade range.

  • Letitia B. Carter Scholarship

Application Deadline: 3/20/2023 Amount: Varies

To be eligible for the Letitia B. Carter scholarship, applicants must be a Maryland resident, high school senior or college student high school, college or corporate instructor or hospitality industry professional. Must be pursuing hospitality related coursework, and have a minimum cumulative unweighted grade point average of 3.0 out of 4.0 (high school and college students only).

The United Negro College Fund/ UNCF 

The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) offers a wide range of scholarships for minorities, including African Americans with various backgrounds and interests. The deadline is March 1st.

The UNCF provides students with financial assistance that will help them attend college so they can pursue their dreams. They have many different scholarships available to people who are interested in higher education but may not be able to afford it otherwise.

XQ Institute Super School Project 

XQ Institute created the Super School Project to help students who want to graduate from high school prepared for life after graduation by creating better schools and education programs. To this end, it awards two types of scholarship money: start-up capital to help develop a unique educational program at a particular school and implementation funding for students who want to pursue higher education after high school completion. The next deadline has not yet been announced.

Black Excel African American Student’s College Guide

Black Excel is a free, online resource for African American students. It provides information about colleges and universities that have African American student organizations and scholarships available to African American students. Black Excel also has links to other sites with additional scholarship resources for African Americans.

Ayn Rand Essay Contest

If you are a high-school student and have an interest in the philosophy of Ayn Rand, this is the contest for you. The Ayn Rand Essay Contest is open to all high school seniors who are U.S. citizens, live in the U.S., and plan on attending college in September 2018 as full-time students (including those who plan on taking gap yearshttps://aynrand.org/students/essay-contests/

“Targeting Excellence” Scholarships

“Targeting Excellence” is a scholarship program for high school seniors who have a passion for the arts. Students can apply to any of the four categories: dance, music, theater and visual arts. To be considered eligible you must have at least a 3.0 GPA and be a US citizen or permanent resident.

Be on the lookout for opportunities and don’t be afraid to apply!

While scholarships for high school students may seem like a tough nut to crack, it’s not impossible especially if you trust GOD, and trust the process. You just must be willing to do the sweat work. The more scholarships you apply for, the better your chances of winning one! If you don’t win this time around, keep trying there are plenty of other opportunities out there waiting for you, don’t get discourage.
